How to Pack a Backpack

When you properly pack a backpack, it can store a lot of gear while staying comfortable. This article will explain how to properly pack a backpack. Packing can be broken down into three main areas of the pack for gear to go. The first area is called the bottom zone. This area is used to store bulky items like sleeping bags and shoes. The second area is called the Core Zone. It is used to store denser, heavier items like your food, camp stove, and tent. The last main area is called the Top Zone. This is used to store bulky essentials that you might need while hiking. Some examples would be extra jackets or clothes and a first-aid kit. Another smaller area of the backpack is the accessory pockets. These are pockets on the side, front, and hip areas of the pack. They are used for small items that you will need often. Some examples are a map, trail food, water, and bug spray. Tool loops and lash-on points are used to store things that cannot be easily stored in other places. Some examples are walking sticks, camp chairs, and rope.

How to Pick a Backpack

When you are going backpacking you want to make sure that you have the right kind of pack for your hike. First you need to know what size backpack you need for the type of hiking you do. There are three different sizes of backpack. These are not personal sizes, they are relating to the length of hiking trips you take. The smallest pack is called an Overnight Pack. This is a pack for a one night trip, the pack size is generally 35 liters or less. The next pack is called a Weekend Pack. These packs are for 2-3 night trips, pack sizes are generally 35 – 50 liters. The last type of pack is called a Multi-day Pack. These packs are for trips of 5 nights or more, pack sizes are 50 – 75 liters. As the pack size increases you bring more clothes, food, and water for longer trips. After you have decided what size pack you want, you need to decide which features you want the most. These features are pretty similar between the different sizes of packs, but they do vary somewhat. The next step to choosing your backpack will be finding the right fit for you. Many stores have employees in the hiking department that will help you with measurement and fitting you for your pack. These days many packs are One-Size Fits Most. The packs are adjustable, so that the same pack can be used for many different people.
